FUN 10DM (1964) Verner Panton

FUN 10DM (1964), design Verner Panton
The pendant lamp FUN 10DM (1964) was created by the designer Verner Panton in 1964 and is now manufactured by the manufacturer Verpan in Denmark.
Many people regard the FUN pendant lamp as one of Verner Panton's (1926-1998) masterpieces within lighting design. This pendant light has sparked joy and a wealth of stories since 1964. Now, on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of Panton's birth, another story is closing on the collection. The idea for FUN resulted from Panton's striving for a lamp that would cast a diffuse light and would have an optimal effect in a colored interior. Panton hung four layers of stuck shells on a delicate chrome frame, which, in addition to forming a sculpture in a room, also cast a light that allowed the colors to develop fully. In collaboration with the widow of the designer, Marianne Panton, Verpan now presents FUN with a frame in brass finish.
Every Verner Panton product receives a certificate of authenticity with the date of manufacture and the annual edition number.

Warmer glow

FUN with a brass surface offers an alternative to the existing model, as it gives the pendant lamp a warmer glow and is therefore suitable for lighter and more "Scandinavian" rooms. The contrast between the golden metal and the mother-of-pearl-colored shells gives FUN a delicate, interesting interplay.

Due to its transparent form of expression, FUN is suitable for hanging individually or in groups over dining tables, in corners and generally in every room.

Pearl-like surface

For many years, Panton worked on designing a pendant lamp that would get the most out of an interior. It shouldn't be a lamp in the same old materials. He wanted to create something completely new - even in terms of expression. First he considered making the lamp out of plastic, the preferred material of the time. However, plastic didn't have the look he was looking for. He wanted a lamp with a living appearance that would cast its light in interesting, diffuse cascades. He finally found what he was looking for on a trip with Marianne Panton.

During a vacation in Malaysia, Panton discovered the new material at his feet: delicate shells with a lively pearl structure. When the air in the room sets them in motion, they produce the most exquisite, whistling music. Although Panton was initially enthusiastic, his enthusiasm grew when it turned out that he could do a good deed at the same time.

The United Nations was looking for ways to create more jobs in developing countries. By using shells on his FUN lamp, Panton was able to contribute to this project. Then as now, FUN consisted of finely processed shells that were cut by hand and prepared for hanging.

FUN with a brass surface will be available from VAN VUGHT interiors from September 2016.
